Will Native Code Come Back From the Edge?

In the last year, Microsoft has publicly recommitted to advancing C++ functionality in Visual Studio 2010, but many developers who took the time to download Visual C++ for Visual Studio 11 Developer Preview were not happy. For native developers, the lack of the core C++11 language features was a slap in the face.

Even Microsoft admits that its VC++ compiler isn’t up to par with those of its competitors, especially in terms of C++11 compliance. And anticipated features including C++/CLI IntelliSense were not included in the IDE or Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1, so where is the commitment for C++ and native developers? Microsoft has been working on a new C++11 language feature called variadic templates, but alas, it also didn’t make it into Visual Studio 2011.
